Dorothy Stone has been remodeling, designing and building homes in and around Kinnelon for 30 years. She’s always loved the homebuilding industry and lived in five of the 22 homes she renovated or built from scratch.
A recent project in Fayson Lakes was the impetus for Home Energy Matters. Despite new insulation, windows, siding, heating and air conditioning exceeding current construction best practices, her office was always cold and drafty.
When Dorothy investigated the source of the drafts, she discovered green building approaches that have revolutionized conventional thinking. Traditionally, houses were allowed to “breathe” through random holes in the structure. Now, green builders realize that even small holes around vents, plumbing and the chimney chase allow the escape of warm air and the intrusion of cold, outside air. Comfort is compromised, and homeowners waste money in heating and air conditioning.
Gordon Stone, cofounder of Home Energy Matters with Dorothy, in his 30 year career as a management consultant, helped businesses world-wide to grow profitably.
Gordon and Dorothy began their foray into greenness in March of 2009, traveling to a green building conference in New Orleans. They decided to become certified by the Building Performance Institute (BPI) and start to give back to their planet by helping to lower energy use.
BPI is the nationally acclaimed certification, accreditation and quality assurance program that requires the use of state-of-the-art home testing techniques to develop and prioritize suggested upgrades that increase a home’s energy performance, comfort, health and safety.
Only companies whose employees have passed the rigorous training programs of the Building Performance Institute, a recognized leader in organization and individual training of building professionals, are able to enroll in New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program™.
