Energy Efficient Hot Water

Water heaters are the least efficient piece of heating equipment in your home.

Why? 100 years ago, someone decided that if we were going to have hot water when we wanted it, we had to keep a 40 or 50 gallon tank hot 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. Most of the time this tank just sits there waiting to be used, and while it waits, it is losing heat to the air. Because the tank has a flame at the bottom and an exhaust at the top, it is difficult to effectively insulate. The burner comes on periodically to keep the water in the tank hot, waiting for you to use it. Keeping a poorly insulated big tank of water hot “just in case” can waste about 46% of the heat energy in your fuel.

There is something you can to reduce the heat loss of your current water heater—use an insulation jacket. If you do this yourself, be careful not to block the air supply to the burner at the bottom of the water heater or the exhaust at the top. Wrapping your water heater in an insulation jacket helps maintain heat but will not save you as much as converting to an indirect or tank-less water heater.

Indirect fired hot water

One solution is to use the home heating boiler as the source of heat. This eliminates the need for a burner or an exhaust so that the top and bottom can be fully insulated. “Indirect Fired” systems like this increase the amount of heat actually used from 54% to 87%.

Tank-less water heater

For homes that used forced air heat from a furnace, a more efficient water heating solution is to eliminate the holding tank altogether and heat only that water which will actually be used.

This “instant” water heater uses a very hot flame which comes on when you turn the hot water tap. These water heaters can be 92% efficient compared with the standard tank at 54%.

Either strategy can lower your bills and ensure you have hot water when you want it.
